Triathlons, even for the highly trained, are a test of mental and physical strength. For two-time triathlon competitor and Herbalife employee Kevin Kraus, finishing the 2014 Herbalife Triathlon in Torrance, California became a challenge he couldn’t have imagined just four months earlier.

In June 2014, he was riding his motorcycle home from work and was involved in a serious accident. Doctors performed nine different operations on his leg, but there was too much damage. On June 7, his leg was amputated below the knee.

When he woke up from the surgery and saw his amputated leg for the first time, he knew that this would be a defining moment in his life. Kevin saw two paths he could take – a path filled with self-pity, doubt and regret, or a path where he stood up to the challenge and proved to himself that he could overcome any obstacle.

“I don’t want people to look at me and say, ‘Wow, that’s great, good for him.’ I want them to see me as the competition and try to keep up with me.”

Once he came home from the hospital he was eager to get walking again and was enthusiastic to visit the prosthetic doctor. He shocked his doctor when he got up and started walking on his new prosthetic immediately.

With only three months until the Herbalife Triathlon in September, Kevin felt the momentum and was driven more than ever to train. He went back to the gym and his family, friends and the Herbalife community rallied around him.

On the day of the race, his anxiety was high but his preparation paid off. Competing and crossing the finish line was the best feeling he had in a long time. Kevin is determined to come back even stronger for the next triathlon.

“I don’t want people to look at me and say, ‘Wow, that’s great, good for him.’ I want them to see me as the competition and try to keep up with me.”
Most of all, he says he doesn’t want anyone to feel sorry for him.

He’s back.
