World Obesity Day: Global Issue, Global Solutions

You know something is huge when there is a single day to recognize it, like Independence Day or New Year’s Day. It’s amazing to think we now have World Obesity Day, which is recognized on October 11 so that governments, medical professionals, charities and businesses large and small will rededicate themselves to ending the obesity epidemic through investments in treatment, education, prevention and early intervention.

It’s sad to think the obesity epidemic has become so pervasive that we need to designate a day as a reminder of the massive challenge that affects hundreds of millions of families everywhere. But at Herbalife Nutrition, we don’t need to be reminded. We think about it daily as we are driven by our purpose to make the world healthier and happier.

Facing the Facts on Obesity

The facts and figures have become too familiar. Experts think we may reach 2.7 billion adults worldwide either overweight or obese by 2025. That’s billions! Out of that population, roughly 177 million will need treatment for severe obesity.

Without action to reverse these trends, we will continue to see a rise in incidences of heart disease, diabetes, liver disease and different forms of cancer. And the annual global medical bill to address the consequences may reach over $1 trillion per year in the next decade, further accelerating sky rocketing public healthcare costs.

I’m not running down these horrifying statistics to depress anybody. That’s not what this day is about. Instead, World Obesity Day is about facing the reality of this crisis and pursing opportunities to help, to improve people’s health, to save and change people’s lives.
